For the second year in a row, students at LSU Health New Orleans School of Dentistry pulled out their big pots on an August Sunday morning to cook for a cause. They turned a celebration tradition into a celebration of service. They prepared their award-winning jambalaya, along with sides and desserts, for a group of very special people--the first responders who protect and keep us safe.

"We have participants from all the students and residents at the school," notes Jonathan Doucet, LSU Health New Orleans dental student organizer. "We have dental students, dental hygiene students, dental laboratory technology students. We have residents who are in their post grad here at LSU. It’s a very diverse group, and everyone’s very excited to help. You can tell by all the different colored scrubs today that we’re all here."
The students also expressed their thanks on posters they created and hand-written letters for each officer and firefighter.

When everything was done and packed up, groups of students delivered everything to the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 8th and Levee NOPD Districts, six New Orleans Fire Department Station Engines, as well as LSU Health New Orleans University Police.

The event, sponsored by the Student Government Association at the dental school, is funded by student dues.

"This is one of the those events where you truly feel like every dollar you spend to bring the food, bring the drinks, bring the posters and dental supplies, every single penny we spend on this event is going to a good cause, and it’s something everyone can be excited about," says Doucet.

"We call the police officers and fire officers let them know, and they’re so grateful for everything we do."
